Community based early childhood education initiative in Ethiopia

About All Children–Africa (AAC-A)- is a child-focused local non-governmental organisation working to advance the well-being, protection, and development of vulnerable children, with a strong emphasis on early childhood care and education (ECCE) for marginalised communities. Operating in fragile and low-resource contexts, AAC-A recognises that the early years of a child’s life are critical for cognitive, emotional, and social development, and that children facing poverty, displacement, disability, or social exclusion are often the least likely to access quality early learning opportunities.

The organisation promotes holistic, community-based ECCE approaches that integrate early learning, nutrition, health, and psychosocial support. Its programmes are designed to ensure that young children—particularly girls, children with disabilities, and those in displacement-affected settings—have access to safe, inclusive, and stimulating environments that support school readiness and long-term development outcomes. AAC-A works closely with caregivers, especially women, to strengthen their capacity to provide nurturing care, recognising the central role of families in early childhood development.

A key focus of AAC-A’s work is addressing structural barriers to inclusion. This includes adapting early learning spaces and teaching methods to be disability-inclusive, promoting gender-sensitive caregiving practices, and engaging communities to challenge harmful social norms that limit children’s participation in education. The organisation also supports livelihood initiatives for families, linking economic strengthening with improved child well-being and access to education.

Through partnerships with local organisations, community groups, and development actors, AAC-A contributes to building sustainable and inclusive early childhood systems. Its approach aligns with global best practices in ECCE and child protection, ensuring that interventions are contextually relevant and responsive to the intersecting vulnerabilities faced by children in underserved communities. Its mission centres on:

  • Promoting holistic child development, including early childhood care, education, and protection
  • Supporting family resilience and sustainable livelihoods, especially for women and caregivers
  • Advancing safeguarding, child protection, and safe environments for children Strengthening community-based and inclusive approaches that address gender inequality, vulnerability, and social exclusion, which in turn helps ECCE.
