Developement of Learning through play materials and ECE Assessment Tools -Zambia

Through the World Bank funded project the Zambia Enhancing Early Learning Project (ZEEL)aims to expand the supply and demand of ECE opportunities and to create basic learning conditions that will allow disadvantaged children to develop cognitive and socio-emotional skills that will help them to continue to learn and thrive. Beneficiaries: Teachers, parents, and children 3-4 years. Geographical Scope: The project targets 45 disadvantaged districts in Zambia covering all the ten provinces Outcomes

  1. Access: Increased supply of ECE facilities in targeted disadvantaged areas through the expansion of a hub and community-based satellite model involving local communities in construction and maintenance of facilities. • 112- hubs and • 110-satellite have been constructed
  2. Quality: Development, and implementation of ECE quality standards, including those related to ECE materials, facilities, and workforce training, deployment and assessment. Two major documents have been developed: • The National Quality Standards for Zambia • The Quality Early Learning Environment Tool • Development of the formative Assessment Tools
  3. Continuing Professional Development Development comprehensive ECE CPD framework for ECE and ensure in-service training, mentoring and leadership training includes a focus on gender-sensitive pedagogical approaches and child’s rights and health and safety. The following documents: • CPD framework • 11 modules for CPD • Integrated Caregivers manual
    1. Development of various ECE mateterials that include: The Learning Through Play materials The Transition Management Guidelines for ECE The School Health and Nutrition (WASH) materials for ECE The Care givers manual The Communication Strategy for ECE that aims at advocacy
  4. Development of community based modules such as The Parent Centre Committee Module that aims at parental involvement in the management of the ECE centres in the community. The Young Mothers and Parents manual that aims at helping young mothers and parents to get involved in the holistic development of their children through care and nurturing activities.
