Upscaling Early Childhood Teaching Practices: A Regional Initiative (Lagos, Nigeria and Malawi)

The Upscaling Early Childhood Education Practices in Malawi initiative, convened by the Early Years Learning Initiative in collaboration with the Centre for Humanity and Sustainable Development, was an intensive three-month virtual engagement designed to elevate early childhood education practices across Nigeria and Malawi. The program brought together a dynamic cohort of passionate teachers committed to improving learning outcomes for young children.

Participants engaged in structured weekly sessions that focused on professional and personal development, best practices in early childhood education, classroom observation techniques, special education strategies, and effective parent engagement. Each session was designed to provide educators with actionable skills and knowledge that could be directly applied in their classrooms. Throughout the program, teachers actively shared experiences, reflected on their practices, and collaborated with peers to identify practical solutions to common challenges in early childhood education.

A core component of the initiative was fostering a shared understanding of holistic educational goals. Teachers were encouraged to adopt a collaborative approach, emphasizing shared responsibility for improving the effectiveness of early childhood learning environments. The program created a platform for cross-cultural exchange, knowledge sharing, and community building by connecting educators across borders.

Structured feedback and catch-up sessions allowed participants to consolidate learning, reflect on their teaching strategies, and receive guidance on continuous improvement. The program also emphasized the importance of continuous professional development, staying updated on best practices, and engaging in reflective practice to maintain high standards of education for young children.

This initiative demonstrated that creating cohesive and impactful early childhood education environments requires both collaboration and ongoing learning. The enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment of the participating teachers were evident throughout the three months, ensuring that the children in their care are supported by educators who are skilled, informed, and inspired. Ultimately, the program strengthened the professional capacity of teachers, connected communities, and set the stage for sustained improvements in early childhood education practices across Nigeria and Malawi.
